4-7-8 Breathing vs Visama Vritti: Does the Ratio Matter?

No classical manual specifies four, seven and eight. The numbers are modern, the structure is old, and the evidence points at neither. It points at the rate.

4-7-8 breathing is a slow pattern of four counts in, seven held, eight out. Andrew Weil published it in 2010 as an adaptation of yogic pranayama. It calms people. But when researchers ran it against other patterns in 2025, plain breathing at six per minute raised heart rate variability more. The ratio everyone argues about matters less than the rate nobody mentions.

Where the numbers actually came from

Weil, a physician at the University of Arizona, released the pattern through the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine in February 2010 and called it a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system. He was straightforward about where it came from. He had adapted it from pranayama, the breath discipline of classical yoga, and he never claimed the three integers were ancient.

The internet supplied that part. Search for 4-7-8 today and you will find it described as something yogis have practised for thousands of years, which is true of the family and false of the numbers. No classical manual specifies four, seven and eight. What the manuals specify is stranger, and considerably harder.

Ten seconds, your own ratio

  1. Sit and count your breaths for one minute without changing anything. Note the number.
  2. Now aim for six in a minute, which is about ten seconds a cycle.
  3. Split those ten seconds however suits you: four in and six out, five and five, or four in, two held, four out.
  4. Protect the rate. Let the ratio be whichever version you will still be doing next week.

The classical ratio is 1:4:2, and almost nobody can hold it

Classical pranayama counts breath in mātrā, a unit of measure rather than a second. The three phases carry names: pūraka for the inhalation, kumbhaka for the retention, recaka for the exhalation. The proportion carried down through the hatha lineages and restated in the Sivananda tradition is 1:4:2. Inhale one measure, retain four, release two.

Run that at a four-count inhale and you get 4-16-8. Twenty-eight counts, more than half of them spent holding, which is where most beginners quit inside a week. Weil's version is that same shape with the retention cut by more than half. He shortened the hold because the faithful version cannot be taught to a general audience, and he was right about that.

The tradition graded the difficulty openly. The Sivananda summary puts beginner practice at twelve mātrā, intermediate at twenty-four, advanced at thirty-two, measured on the inhalation alone with retention and exhalation scaling behind it. At the beginner grade the full cycle runs eighty-four counts. This was never a technique for a stressful Tuesday. It was a graded discipline taught under supervision, far closer to breath retention as a formal practice than to a sleep aid.

So the honest provenance runs like this: 4-7-8 is a modern simplification of a real classical structure, made usable by weakening the part the tradition cared most about. That is defensible design. The open question is whether the surviving numbers do anything.

What happened when someone ran the patterns side by side

In 2025 a team at Brigham Young University and Harvard Medical School ran the comparison that ten thousand blog posts had skipped. Marchant and colleagues put eighty-four students through four conditions with a three-lead ECG on the chest and a capnometer at the mouth: square breathing, 4-7-8, six breaths a minute at a 4:6 inhale-to-exhale ratio, and six breaths a minute at 5:5.

They opened the paper with a sentence worth repeating. Square and 4-7-8 breathing, they wrote, are popularly promoted by psychotherapists but have little empirical support.

Six per minute beat both named patterns on heart rate variability, with small to medium effects. Neither square breathing nor 4-7-8 shifted blood pressure or mood in any meaningful way, and neither did the six-per-minute conditions. The winner won on one measure, not on everything, and that distinction matters more than the headline.

There was an unexpected cost. Breathing at six per minute produced mild over-breathing, shedding more carbon dioxide than the students needed to lose. The patterns built around holds did not carry that risk. Trade-offs like this vanish when a technique gets sold as strictly better than its rivals.

Does a longer exhale actually do anything?

The folk explanation for all of it is that a long exhale stimulates the vagus nerve, so any pattern with a longer out-breath than in-breath should win. You will find that claim repeated almost everywhere, including by people in a position to check it.

Meehan and Shaffer checked. Working at the University of Delaware and Truman State, they held the rate constant at six breaths a minute and varied only the proportion, 1:2 against 1:1. Their first study, twenty-six participants, found no effect on time-domain or frequency-domain heart rate variability. Their replication, sixteen participants, found no effect on the nonlinear measures either.

Their survey of the earlier literature explains why nobody noticed. Three previous studies found no ratio effect, four found an advantage for longer exhalations, one favoured equal breathing and one favoured longer inhalations. The field had been split for four decades and had mostly settled into quoting whichever result it preferred.

None of this makes the exhale irrelevant. In 2023 a Stanford group led by Balban ran five minutes a day of three breathwork patterns against mindfulness meditation for a month, and cyclic sighing, the one built on prolonged exhalations, produced the largest improvement in mood and the biggest drop in respiratory rate. The physiological sigh has earned its reputation. It earned it as a practice repeated daily, though, not as a ratio that outperforms other ratios at a fixed rate in a laboratory.

The number that matters is breaths per minute

Behind all of this sits the largest body of evidence anyone has assembled on the question. Laborde's team screened 1,842 abstracts, pooled 223 studies of voluntary slow breathing, and found increases in vagally-mediated heart rate variability during practice, immediately after a single session, and after multi-session training. Slowing down works. The literature is not ambiguous on that point.

Where it gets specific is the target. Adult resonance frequency, the rate at which the cardiovascular system's own rhythms line up and amplify each other, sits between roughly 4.5 and 6.5 breaths a minute. That is a cycle of about nine to thirteen seconds.

Now do the arithmetic on the famous patterns. 4-7-8 is a nineteen-second cycle, a little over three breaths a minute. Box breathing at 4-4-4-4 is sixteen seconds, under four a minute. The classical 1:4:2 at the beginner grade is slower than either by a wide margin. Every celebrated ratio in circulation lands below the band, out on the far side of slow.

That is the most economical explanation for the 2025 result, and it is an interpretation rather than a finding: the conditions that won were the ones sitting inside the resonance window, and the ratios that lost were optimising a variable that turns out to be secondary. Our own reading of where six per minute stops being enough still stands. The band is a band, not a magic number.

How to choose a ratio you will keep

The practical consequence is smaller and better than the argument around it. Stop auditing your ratio. Count your cycle instead.

Ten seconds a cycle puts you at six a minute, in the middle of the band. Split those ten seconds however suits you. Four in and six out, five and five, four in and two held and four out: the evidence says the split is yours to choose and the rate is the part to protect. If holds suit you, they may also guard against the mild over-breathing the Brigham Young team measured.

There is a reason the classical manuals fixed on the count rather than the feeling. They were measuring something. They measured it in mātrā and graded it in twelves, tracking a variable the capnometers now read directly, without the instruments and without the vocabulary. They were not aiming at heart rate variability, so it is no criticism that their proportions sit outside the band. But they were right about the thing modern breathwork keeps mislaying: breath is something you count.

Exhale-led practice still performs well over weeks: Stanford's cyclic sighing trial beat mindfulness meditation on mood. The exhale earns its place as a daily practice, not as a ratio that wins in a lab.

How many breaths per minute should I aim for?

Adult resonance frequency sits roughly between 4.5 and 6.5 breaths a minute, a cycle of about nine to thirteen seconds. Six per minute lands in the middle and is the easiest target to hold. One caution from the 2025 trial: six per minute produced mild over-breathing, so if you feel light-headed, slow the rate or add a short hold.
