Sleep
Calming the mind for rest — wind-downs and the practices that quiet racing thoughts at night.
If your body is exhausted but your mind starts talking the moment the light goes off, the problem is usually arousal rather than willpower — and most of it was decided before you got into bed. Two instructions carry nearly all of the evidence, and neither of them is a supplement: let the light around you fall in the hours before sleep, and keep your hour roughly fixed, weekends included. In a study of 60,977 adults, the steadiest sleepers showed up to 48% lower mortality risk than the least regular — and regularity mattered more than how long they slept.
The practices below start from that. If you still have an hour before bed, begin with an ordered evening wind-down. If you are already lying awake and the thinking is speeding up, go to what to do with racing thoughts at night. And if sleep will not come at all, deep rest without sleeping is the practice for the hours you cannot get back.
